Lockpick Simulator
Master fine-motor angle discrimination, tactile tension feedback, and mechanical sweet-spot micro-adjustments inspired by classic RPG lockpicking.
What This Test Actually Measures
The Lockpick Simulator Benchmark evaluates an essential dimension of motor control often neglected by simple click tests: continuous radial angle discrimination and tactile tension modulation. Made famous in iconic tactical and role-playing video games such as Fallout, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, and Thief, mechanical lockpicking replicates the sensory feedback loop of physical lock manipulation.
In this assessment, a secret unlock angle (sweet spot) is randomized across a 160° semicircle. Players must sweep their bobbypin, engage cylinder tension, observe how far the plug rotates before resistance binds the mechanism, and release tension before pick fatigue causes a snap.
How the Test Works
You have 60 seconds to pick as many consecutive locks as possible.
- Sweep & Position: Move your mouse cursor across the upper half of the screen to orient the bobbypin between -88° and +88°.
- Apply Tension: Hold W, Space, or Left Click to rotate the cylinder with the tension wrench.
- Observe Cylinder Give: If the pick is far from the sweet spot, the lock binds almost immediately (yielding only 0°–15° of give). As your pick gets closer to the correct angle, the cylinder turns further (up to 90° for a full unlock).
- Release on Jam: Holding tension while jammed subjects the bobbypin to extreme stress. The durability meter drops rapidly; if it reaches 0%, the bobbypin snaps, incurring an angle penalty and time loss.
Performance Benchmarks
| Locks Solved (60s) | Classification | Percentile | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8+ Locks | Master Infiltrator | Top 5% | Instantaneous angle discrimination, sub-second binary sweep, zero pick snaps. |
| 6–7 Locks | Expert Locksmith | Top 20% | Fluid radial sweeping, excellent tension release reflexes, high consistency. |
| 4–5 Locks | Skilled Operative | Top 50% | Steady progress with occasional pick jams, solid spatial boundary mapping. |
| 1–3 Locks | Apprentice Picker | Bottom 50% | Tendency to over-rotate into resistance or hesitation during radial sweeps. |
Frequently Asked Questions
What strategy is fastest for finding the sweet spot?
Use binary angular division. Start by tapping tension at center (0°). If it binds with zero give, quickly test -45° and +45°. Whichever side yields more initial rotation gives you the correct quadrant. Narrow down within that quadrant in 10° increments until the lock cracks.
Why does releasing tension immediately matter so much?
Cylinder binding applies high strain to the bobbypin, depleting durability within 2.6 seconds of continuous pressure. Releasing tension the instant you feel the rattle resets strain, preserves your pick, and allows an immediate micro-adjustment without triggering the 380 ms snap recovery animation.
Does mouse DPI affect lockpicking precision?
A moderate mouse sensitivity (around 800–1200 eDPI) allows smooth angular sweeps without jitter or sudden jumps. Extremely high DPI can make tiny 2° micro-adjustments difficult to isolate cleanly.
