What Does the Stroop Test Measure?

The Stroop Test measures selective attention and cognitive interference control — your brain’s ability to suppress an automatic, overlearned response (reading) in favor of a controlled, effortful one (color naming). Reading is one of the most automatic cognitive processes in a literate adult. When a color word (like “RED”) is printed in a conflicting ink color (like blue), the automatic reading pathway fires before the color-naming pathway, creating interference. Your prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex must resolve this conflict on every trial.
