What Does the Verbal Memory Test Measure?
This test measures verbal recognition memory — your brain’s ability to determine whether a word has appeared before in the current session. Words appear one at a time. Each word is either genuinely new (shown for the first time) or repeated (shown previously). Your job: click NEW or SEEN accurately. As the test progresses, the pool of seen words grows, making discrimination progressively harder.
Recognition memory is distinct from recall: recall requires producing an item from scratch (like a free recall test), while recognition only requires confirming whether an item matches something stored in memory. This test specifically measures episodic word recognition — the ability to remember the occurrence of a specific word in a specific recent context, which relies on both the hippocampus (episodic binding) and the phonological loop (verbal working memory maintenance).
How This Test Works
A word is shown in the center of the card. Click NEW if this word hasn’t appeared in the current session. Click SEEN if it has appeared before. You start with 3 lives. Incorrect answers cost one life. The test ends when all 3 lives are lost. Your score is the total number of correct classifications made before running out of lives. Higher scores mean you correctly identified more words — both new ones and repeated ones.
The difficulty scales naturally: early in the test, only a few words have been seen, so the challenge is low. As the seen-word pool grows, the probability of re-encountering a seen word increases and the discrimination task becomes harder — especially for abstract or low-distinctiveness words.
